‘Change happens through movement and movement heals.’ Joseph Pilates (1883-1967)
Pilates is based on the idea of integrating the body and mind, and Joseph Pilates believed that Pilates was about the “complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit”.
The principles of Pilates are based on
- Breathing: correct breathing helps to provide a focus for the mind and to increase oxygen intake
- Concentration: Paying attention to your body and sensations to improve your awareness and avoid risk of injury
- Control: Consciously controlling your muscles
- Centring: using and engaging the “centre” to stabilise and protect the spine
- Precision: focusing on the quality of movement
- Flow: Moving smoothly, with control, during an exercise and transitioning between movements
